<p>So here’s a thought for ya …</p>
<p>You had an OUTSTANDING week in fitness, and you came to all 5 workout classes at the Dance Center. Let’s say you burned around 700 calories per class, which calculates to a whopping 3,500 calories!! That’s excellent, since 3,500 calories equals a pound, so you very well could have burned 1 pound that week! Five hours to lose 3,500 calories is what I call time well spent! Now, imagine, on Friday, you’re heading to work and you stop over to grab you a bacon, egg and cheese biscuit w/coffee from “somewhere” ( 550 calories); you walk into the office and your boss surprises everyone with doughnuts! You grab 2 (440 calories); then for lunch, you and a co-worker grab a hamburger with cheese and a medium fries from “somewhere” (980 calories); then you just remembered that you are meeting a friend for dinner at a local restaurant where you LOVE their low fat grilled chicken pasta (873 calories), oh, and you split a brownie sundae (326 calories). Hmm, in a total of just three hours you gained 3,169 calories, and took in a TON of grease! So what does all this mean?? Well simply put, make the calories you burn in your workout count after you workout. There are “healthy” calories that you can take in to actually help your body retain benefits from a good workout; then there are “horrible” calories that pretty much defeat the purpose of your workout. No need to burn 700 calories in 1 hour, only to put it back on in a split second with the “horrible” calories. Now, don’t get me wrong, I LOVE me a sweet doughnut, or a GREAT chicken pasta dinner, but enjoy these in moderation! Try the 80/20 rule. Here’s how it works:</p>
<ol>
<li><strong>QUANTITY</strong>: Eat until you are 80% full and leave 20% of your stomach empty to leave room to help your body digest the food. Eat slowly and chew your food well to help with digestion. Stop eating when you’re satisfied and become familiar with the feeling of 80% full.</li>
<li><strong>QUALITY</strong>: Balance of nutrients- 80% of every meal should be land and ocean vegetables. The other 20% should be either a protein or a grain.</li>
</ol>
<p>Diet and exercise work hand in hand, and compliments each other greatly! The 80/20 rule helps restore balance to your diet, one meal at a time. Apply this to your diet, and you’ll be well on your way to a healthier, happier you!</p>
<p>So here’s to a “Fit-n-Fly” JULY!</p>

<p>For instance, the month of August has 5 Mondays, 5 Tuesdays and 5 Wednesdays, and they all fall on the last week of the month; therefore, FiF Element Fitness will either feature a Guest Instructor for those days or not hold any classes on those days.</p>
<p>We will be sure to keep you informed and our calendars updated to reflect the most accurate schedule possible.</p>

But many of you remember this tune from the ’80s, and since we’re spotlighting our beautiful Fit-n-Fly Girl <strong>Mickey Zaira</strong>, well, I couldn’t resist!</p>
<p><img src="http://fif-element.com/email/newsletters/images/07-title-fitnfly-mickey.jpg" alt="Mickey Zaira" width="238" height="183" align="right" border="0" />Say ‘Namaste’ to Mickey! Mickey, originally from the state of Kerala located in south India, has been taking FiF Element Fitness classes for nearly a year now, and it has been a joy to literally witness improvements in her endurance throughout each workout! “…Slowly I am trying to regain my strength so that I can dance for hours like before,” says Mickey who trained in classical dance for 13 years, but stepped away for a little. “Now slowly I am trying to regain my strength so that I can dance for hours like before. That’s a secret goal of mine.”</p>
<p>Like many of us, Mickey’s busy work and study schedule presented a challenge for her to enjoy her classical dancing, which in part, served as her regular workout routine. How is she overcoming it? “By being determined to be motivated, and working hard at achieving this goal,” she said. And the fact that the classes are energetic, enthusiastic and fun “motivates me to come back,” she said. “Dancing is power, and I can never get bored with dance because there’s always room to improve.”</p>
<p>Mickey says she likes all of the classes offered, but her favorite is Zumba!</p>
<p>“ … I like the fast movements! After a long day of work, the upbeat music improves my mood and makes me feel like I’m at a dance party! It also helps me sleep very well at night!”</p>
<p><strong>Mickey shares some facts about India:</strong></p>

<p>However, our performances are THAT MUCH MORE EXCITING whenever we have DANCERS &amp; VOLUNTEERS!</p>
<p>Currently, we are looking for:</p>

<li>Performance-passionate people of all ages, shapes and sizes who are full of energy, spunk and spark, and who LOVE to dance Indian and/or Latin-style!</li>
<li>We are also looking for volunteers who can help work the FiF Element Fitness tables and assist in other ways during our events. We are especially looking for those who COMMUNICATE well with others, have friendly, warm and inviting personalities and speaks/enunciates clearly!</li>
</ol>
<p>Or, perhaps you’d just like to be a crowd-filler, and can join in the crowd and help hype up the crowd! This, of course is open to any and everyone!</p>
<p>So, if you fit either or BOTH of the first two areas, please let me know, for we’d LOVE to have you on board!! You guys are ALL amazing, and, well, we just wanna show you off a bit, and show that Fitness REALLY is FUN!</p>

I bring you “cool” cheer as the temps ascend BEYOND 90 degrees!! And it’s not even SUMMER yet! As the temp climbs, and you do more actively (working out, traveling, gardening, etc.) don’t forget to down an essential item more important for survival than food: WATER—you know, that essential element of life that makes up 70% of the planet’s surface and 60% of your body. While water may not be everyone’s favorite drink choice, me personally, I LOVE an ice cold glass or bottle of water!! Other than it having ZERO calories, here are other reasons why you should LOVE water, courtesy of Self Magazine June issue:</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Why water? Because it can …<br />
1. <strong>Perk you up.</strong> Dehydration can cause you to feel fatigued and sluggish.<br />
2. <strong>Strengthen your skeleton. </strong>Not in love with dairy? Drinking mineral water may help increase your calcium intake and prevent bone loss.<br />
3. <strong>Defeat weight creep.</strong> Drinking water cooled to 37.4 degrees may lead to a slight increase in calorie expenditure for an hour after you gulp it; and a glass before a meal, chilled or not, may curb your appetite slightly, helping to cut calories.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">So raise your glass (or bottle) of WATER!!<br />

<p style="text-align: left;">One word that describes sisters Laura &amp; Abby Riddle: inseparable! Sure, you’ll catch them every now and then riding solo in one of FiF Element Fitness’ dance-fitness classes at the Festival Dance Center, but for the most part, they are “2 peas in a pod!”</p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><img src="http://fif-element.com/email/newsletter-1106/images/c1-laura-abby.jpg" alt="Laura &amp; Abby" width="268" height="208" align="right" />“We have always done a lot of things together, and the workouts provide another venue for us to ‘do and discuss’ together,” explains Laura, the elder sister by exactly 26 months, born on the 26th day of their respective months (Laura in April; Abby in June). “We … really do enjoy being around each other, so it just worked out well for us to work out together. It’s also good motivation because someone expects you to come to class,” says Abby.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Living active and healthy lives are very important to the Riddle sisters, but the true joy of working out didn’t come until, “I became proud of what my body could do, and I didn’t worry as much about how I looked or what I weighed,” explained Laura. “I’m truly grateful to have a body that works and I want to enjoy it!”</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">But what keeps them coming back is how much fun they have in the classes!</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">“(The classes allow us to) de-stress and do something positive for ourselves and spend time with outstanding people,” says Laura. “It’s also different from everything else we do during the week, so it’s just a good fun break …” says Abby.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">While they enjoy all the classes, their most favorite is the Indian-dance workout, Masala Bhangra.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">“When I do Masala Bhangra, I feel strong and beautiful, plus it makes me feel like I’m actually at a party in India” Abby says. “I love it, too, because I can dance and feel extremely powerful at the same time,” Laura shares.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">So while they always look forward to rocking out together in class, pretty soon, they’ll be bustin’ some of those moves at the wedding reception of Laura and her fiancée Patrick when they marry on Oct. 2nd this year, where none other than Abby will serve as Laura’s Maid of Honor. Would we have guessed otherwise?!</p>

It is just having fun!” encourages <span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>Tamika Grace</strong></span>, our Fit-n-Fly Girl for the month of May.</p>
<p>After a long day of work, the last thing Tamika wants to do is drive 40 miles to get to the Festival Dance Center in Winston-Salem to take one of FiF Element Fitness’ classes.  But she does it anyway because, “I have found a class and an instructor that motivates me to move. [I don’t mind driving the distance] because I believe in supporting something I am passionate about, plus, Cortney makes the class so exciting and fun! She is so genuine and kind-hearted, and you don’t find many people like Cortney now-a-days! I mean, what instructor hugs you after you’ve sweated like a Coke® bottle on a summer day? And the participants in the class are just so loving … it feels like a family!”</p>
<p>In addition to taking care of her “outer “body, Tamika recently found out that she has high blood pressure, but is determined not to depend on medication to treat it. “I have a goal to lose 20 percent of my body weight and the classes have more than increased my stamina, and I’m on my way to a thinner ‘me’!”</p>
<p>Well, Miss Tamika, not only will you reach your goal, but between your “Go Get ‘Em” attitude, your drive and encouragement from your FiF Element Fitness family, we will make sure you reach that goal!</p>

<li> No admittance into classes AFTER 20 minutes. This is for your safety. It is important that you warm-up/stretch properly before each workout.</li>
<li> <strong>Saturday Mornings: </strong>For those taking ZUMBA on Saturday mornings, please kindly wait in the lobby, hallway or Community Area near the water fountain for the previous class (Masala Bhangra) to end. Please do not enter into the studio until the previous class has ended and the door has been opened. This will allow for an easier transition, and keep distractions to a minimum.</li>
<li> <strong>Children: </strong>Children are allowed to take the class, however, the class is intended for adults. Please make sure the child will be able to endure an hour long workout beforehand. If there’s room, they may sit on the side quietly. Children must be tended to at all times. Please do not allow your children to run around during the class or anywhere in the facility. Cost for children to take the class is $5.</li>

<p>In an effort to fight childhood obesity, Cortney Wilson will be teaching Beyoncè’s “Move Your Body” routine on <strong>Wednesday, May 18th</strong> in ZUMBA Fitness at 6:30pm! It will be incorporated into our regular Zumba classes for all of May!</p>
<p>This special routine comes as part of the “Lets Move” campaign, an effort initiated by First Lady Michelle Obama to help raise a healthier generation of kids; however, I just like the idea of getting kids and adults moving, PLUS this version is a spin off of the hit song &#8220;Get Me Bodied&#8221; and has been edited to be KID-FRIENDLY! <li> Pick up our Referral Cards from the front desk at The Festival Dance Center before  or after class &amp; hand them out to people you’d like to refer to our  classes.</li>
<li> You have from <strong>March 29-April 27</strong> to refer as many people as you can to <strong>ANY</strong> of our classes. They do not all have to come at 1 time or to 1 class.</li>
<li>Be sure to <strong>include your name on all  cards</strong>, for this is what we will use to do our tally. The person <strong>MUST</strong> bring that card with them to  class, w/their name on it as well! No exceptions.</li>
<li> You can <strong>NOT</strong> refer the same person  more than once.</li>
<li> The winner will be notified &amp; announced on Saturday, April 30th  in our Zumba/Zumba Toning class at 10:45am, and presented their prize!<br />

You know her, she is at 99% of ALL classes, and no matter how  challenging the workout or tricky the moves, Amanda will have a smile on her  face the whole time! Amanda has taken classes with FiF Element Fitness since  December 2010, and shares her struggles with her weight &amp; sticking to a  workout routine. “At the 1st class, I couldn’t even touch my toes,  and I broke out in a sweat just doing the stretches,” she says. “I feel so much  better now, can now touch my toes, and I’m bummed out if I miss even a single  workout!” Amanda’s endurance has even improved! For Amanda, the Masala Bhangra  Workout has sculpted her arms; ClubKick has toned her thighs, and Zumba has  introduced her to her hips again! So what is Amanda’s mantra: “Just show up,”  she says. “And it has served me well. No matter which workout, I know Cortney  will work me out, the people will lift my spirits and I’ll leave feeling  great!” Way to go AMANDA!! Thanks for being our Fit-n-Fly Girl for April!</p>
